HIV/AIDS
Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV). It is disease of the human immune system is called Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
AIDS was first reported in 1981 at Los Angeles in homosexual men. American actor Rock Hudson, Nicholas Eden, a Member of Parliament, Arthur Ashe, the American tennis player diagnosed as HIV positive respectively in 1980, 1981,1985,1980.
STIGMA
Stigma is a rigorous social condemnation of personal beliefs that is perceived to be in opposition to educational norms. One who is HIV positive he felt that he is bad person, a sinner. He felt like committing suicide. (32-year-old male migrant worker).because he thought that he had reached the end of his life when he found out about his positive status and thought would die within that day.
Way Forward
- All the HIV prevention intervention should incorporate psychosocial counseling specially to handle the internal STIGMA, Trauma management
- Comprehensive training for the health service providers on STIGMA and Discrimination and its impact on public health management
- Mass media campaigns addressing STIGMA and Discrimination messages with POSTER, BILL BORD AND TVC
- To raise awareness and knowledge of HIV/AIDS among the general population is an urgent need
- Civil society participation is a necessary most to handle HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination
